Stop Hot Foot — SPD Cleat Adapter (Cycling Hot Foot Fix for Recumbent Trike Riders, Foot Pain Relief Solution)

Rides shouldn’t include burning feet. By moving your SPD cleat back 60 mm to the center of your foot, this adapter spreads pressure, restores circulation, and eliminates hot spots. Built for recumbent trike riders, it installs in minutes and lets you ride longer, stronger, and pain‑free.

Benefits

  • Eliminates hot foot — redistributes pressure to stop burning pain and numb toes on long rides.
  • Ride longer, stronger — reduces fatigue so you can stay in the seat for endurance rides without constant stops.
  • Improves circulation — moving the cleat rearward keeps blood flow steady, preventing numbness and discomfort.
  • Reduces knee strain — many riders report smoother pedaling and less joint stress with mid‑foot positioning.
  • Easy install — bolts between cleat and pedal in minutes; no special tools required.
  • Recumbent‑specific design — engineered for trike riders’ foot angle and pedal stroke.
  • Durable + lightweight — 6061 aluminum plates with natural finish resist wear, while ASA spacers spread load evenly.

Specifications

  • Offset: Moves SPD cleat rearward by 60 mm — significantly more than standard 20 mm extenders, placing the cleat under the center of your foot.
  • Plates: 1/8″ 6061 aluminum — lightweight yet strong, with excellent fatigue resistance. Natural finish avoids coatings that would scratch off in use, ensuring long‑term durability.
  • Spacers: 2× ASA polymer spacers — engineered to interface between plate and shoe sole, distributing load evenly. Current fit options: Shimano EX300 shoes and Shimano SH‑SD501 SPD sandals (both highly recommended for breathability and comfort).
  • Nut plates: 2× nut plates — secure anchoring for reliable fastening.
  • Fasteners: 8× high‑strength bolts — complete hardware included for installation.
  • Compatibility: SPD cleats and pedals (other systems in development).
  • Tested on: Catrike 700, Catrike Max, and other recumbent bikes — proven on endurance rides up to 60+ miles.

Does this really work?

Yes — riders who struggled with hot foot report being able to ride for hours pain‑free. We're all built differently, so it’s not a guaranteed fix on it's own, but for many it’s the missing piece.

Will this fit my pedals?

Currently designed for SPD cleats and pedals. If you use another system, contact us with your cleat type — we’re always developing new solutions.

Why not just use short extenders?

We tried them. They helped a little, but the hot foot problem always came back while riding, sometimes as soon as 20 minutes. That’s why we moved the cleat back a full 60 mm — placing it under the center of your foot. This change was the breakthrough that eliminated burning and numbness on long rides.

How much does it move the cleat?

60 mm rearward — significantly more than standard extenders, placing the cleat under the center of your foot for maximum load distribution.

Does moving the cleat back affect pedaling efficiency?

No — shifting the cleat rearward improves comfort while maintaining a natural pedal stroke. Many riders also report reduced knee strain with mid‑foot positioning.

What shoes work best with this adapter?

We recommend breathable cycling shoes or sandals to keep feet cool. Our spacers are currently designed for Shimano EX300 shoes and Shimano SH‑SD501 SPD sandals, both highly recommended for recumbent riders.

What’s included in the kit?

Each kit includes 2 CNC precision machined aluminum plates, 2 ASA engineering polymer spacers, 2 nut plates, and 8 fasteners — everything you need for installation.

Has this been tested?

Yes — proven on Catrike 700, Catrike Max, and other recumbent bikes during endurance rides up to 60+ miles, including 2nd un-assisted recumbent in El Tour Tucson.

Our Story
Stop Hot Foot was born out of real rides and real frustration. After switching from mountain biking to a recumbent trike, short rides were fine — but on longer rides, burning feet and numbness forced constant stops just to restore circulation.
We tried everything: looser, breathable shoes helped a little, and 20 mm cleat extenders gave some relief. But the problem always came back after an hour, and once it started, we had to stop every 20 minutes.
That’s when we designed our own solution: a cleat adapter that moves the SPD cleat back a full 60 mm, placing it under the center of the foot. The difference was immediate — hot foot disappeared, circulation improved, and endurance rides became pain‑free. On 60+ mile rides we could pedal for hours, and on El Tour Tucson we were the 2nd  un‑assisted recumbent across the line - without a single foot issue.
Even better, other riders felt the same. My wife’s first ride with the adapter ended with a simple “wow” — her feet were comfortable, and even her knee pain seemed reduced.
Everyone’s different, and hot foot can have multiple causes. But for us, this was the breakthrough. That’s why we’re sharing it — because we believe it can help a lot of other riders ride longer, stronger, and pain‑free.
